Home learning is very challenging for students and teachers. It can constrain the possibilities. But it can also open them up. One student and teacher homeschooling together found that geography was made more fun and easy to learn and remember when using LEGOS. Research suggests that students learn in a variety of ways, with most having a sensory preference. Some students are more visual. Some more aural. Others more tactile. Tactile learners do well with learning that incorporates touching and manipulating objects. LEGOS is a great way to incorporate visual and tactile learning. With the geography lesson, the student and teacher traced the map then found the points of interest on a globe and then used the LEGOS to create the map again. Since one of geography tests was the ability to draw a map of the learned country {in this case, Africa and its body of waters} freehand, without having an original to reference, the LEGOS exercise was a great prep. The more mediums and the more varied the mediums, the more likely the student will process and retain the knowledge. So, though a classroom full of peers is an excellent resource, one on one can work well too.
Key Takeaways:
- Study suggests that different learners favor different methods of learning over others, such as visual, audio and tactile.
- Tactile learners do well with learning that incorporates the actual manipulation of objects that they can touch.
- When creating maps with LEGOS use a consistent variety of map, a favorite atlas, or online site.
“Building continents with LEGOS, and then adding features is such a simple way to make geography FUN!”
